History

One of New York City's oldest non-profits, East Side House was established in 1891 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and moved to the South Bronx – within one of the nation's poorest congressional districts – in 1963. Our goal is to help motivated students graduate from high school, enroll in college, and build the skills necessary to secure a good job.

Operating from 17 different locations, East Side House helps approximately 8,000 individuals improve their lives each year by providing access to quality education and technology training as gateways out of poverty and into economic and civic opportunity. The continuum of high performing programs includes early childhood and after-school programs, adult education, computer technology programs, and social services.

In addition, East Side House has seven programs that focus specifically on high school graduation and college preparation: Youth and Adult Education Services for students earning their GED, and six high school programs in partnership with the New York City Department of Education: Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School and Bronx Haven High School, the Smith Campus Young Adult Borough Center, the High School for Excellence and Innovation, New Explorers High School, and the Collegiate Institute for Math and Science.

East Side House has 369 full and part time staff members with an operating budget of $11 million, a significant percentage of which comes from private philanthropy.
